There are no costumed dudes battling evil in "American Hero" — just subs and hoagies. Though, come to think of it, the three leads in Bess Wohl's bittersweet, terrifically acted comedy are wearing costumes of a kind: They've just been hired as "sandwich artists" at a new fast-food outlet.
Never mind there's already another franchise three minutes away, or that the new outlet's owner doesn't have a clue about running a restaurant.
Our mismatched trio — the Bad News Bears of the food court — doesn't look promising, either.
Jamie (Ari Graynor), a brash mother of three in her early 30s, was fired from her job at Supercuts for stealing mousse. Now she's ready to kick butt: "Happy grand opening, bitches," she announces. "Let's make some motherf - - king sandwiches."
Lines like this are catnip to Graynor, a gifted comedienne who starred in TV's just-canceled "Bad Teacher" and recalls a young Bette Midler, with the same ability to turn on a dime into defiant vulnerability.
Graynor's well matched with Jerry O'Connell's Ted, a type-A, 40-something MBA let go from his bank job, and Erin Wilhelmi's painfully awkward teenager, Sheri, who works a second shift at a taco joint to help pay her ailing father's bills.
Under Leigh Silverman's precise direction, "American Hero" follows the trio's descent into surreal nuttiness as their employer, Bob (Daoud Heidami), disappears and suppliers cut off the franchise.
With no prime rib or anything else to sell and the regional office ignoring their cries for help, Jamie, Sheri and Ted take matters into their own hands.
Yet this isn't a fairy tale, and the characters' pluck doesn't automatically turn them into successful entrepreneurs. Wohl's portrait of a shopping-malled America scrounging for a paycheck is droll, touching and keenly observed, right down to Dane Laffrey's realistic set, complete with a functioning soda fountain.
The show may be modest in scope, but it touches a nerve.
