It finally happened — and it only took five seasons and 120 episodes. After months, nay, years of fans demanding that Cam and Mitchell tie the knot on "Modern Family" — and the ACLU even launching a campaign – the show finally did it. Heck, the Post even named the would-be wedding the "most anticipated moment" of the TV season way back in September.
All season long has been teeing up to the marriage of Cam and Mitch, the committed gay couple on the hit ABC comedy series.
The show's co-creator Christopher Lloyd initially said the couple weren't getting married because they "didn't want to make an overt political stance" (or in other words, scare off conservative viewers.) But after the Defense of Marriage Act was struck down last summer, the creators began to more seriously consider the couple's nuptials.
"It's a real possibility," Lloyd told Entertainment Weekly that day. "It's certainly something we are contemplating on the show in ways we wouldn't have in prior seasons."
After all that hype, there couldn't have been a better conclusion to the season.
In typical "Modern Family" style, every little thing that could go wrong did, from a drunk mother-in-law to a wildfire running everyone out of the wedding venue.
Despite a plot line carried over from the previous episode in which family patriarch Jay Pritchett uncharacteristically (and rather implausibly) was suddenly iffy on the whole gay wedding thing, he came around and ended up walking his gay son down the aisle.
Juxtaposing all the silliness leading up to the nuptials, the showrunners gave the actual wedding some breathing room. Cam's sister Clare's "best person" speech served as the sentimental narration and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros' "Home" played in the background.
Having waited so long, it was touching to see the moment given the respect it deserved, complete with a kiss.
Fans of the show on Twitter certainly felt satisfied by the conclusion, getting #ModernWedding to trend. And by the sound of it, the waterworks were flowing.
