The 9/11 museum opened its doors to the general public on Wednesday, giving tourists and everyday New Yorkers their first chance to see this solemn memorial to America's darkest day.
Just before the National Sept. 11 Memorial & Museum opened to paying customers, two dozen New York firefighters marched to the entrance and unfurled a massive American flag to mark the weighty moment.
FDNY bagpipes and drummers marched through the entrance, just ahead of the general public.
Little Tommy Minervini, a 9-year-old cancer survivor from Waldwick, NJ, was invited to help hold the flag as it was unfurled.
"It was a special moment for me, holding the flag," he said. "It's a part of history and it made me so happy to hold it."
For at least the first day of general-public attendance, Red Cross grief counselors were stationed across the museum in case the images and memories become too much for some visitors.
Retired social worker Georgine Gorra was among the volunteers at least week's dedication, ready to lend a shoulder to any crying loved ones.
Those VIP visitors last week didn't seem traumatized — just tearful, he said.
"We all were [tearful], frankly," Gorra said.
Visitors to the museum, open seven days a week from 9 a.m. and 8 p.m., have to buy tickets that will have a specified entrance time.
Wednesday was a complete sellout and Thursday tickets are sold out through 6:30 p.m.
Friday and Saturday still have available entry times starting at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively, before there's a full selection on Monday – with all time slots open from 9 a.m. forward.
The last entry times is 7 p.m. each day.
Dignitaries, led by President Obama, and victims' loved ones dedicated the museum this past Thursday.
