The Night Shift (Tuesday, 10 p.m., NBC)

This new series focuses on a group of doctors working in a San Antonio hospital. After a rough night, ex-Army doc TC Callahan (Eoin Macken) deals with a life-threatening situation. His ex, Jordan Alexander (Jill Flint), angles for the night shift's manager job, but she must convince their new boss, Michael Ragosa (Freddy Rodriguez), to hire her. Later, TC and Topher (Ken Leung) are called to the scene of a crash and must deal with an injury that demands all of TC's expertise. Back at the hospital, ER shrink Dr. De La Cruz (Daniella Alonso,) consoles the brother of a wounded teen while TC performs risky surgery. He also counsels Drew (Brendan Fehr, with Jeananne Goosen) about a secret he is keeping.

The Normal Heart (Sunday, 9 p.m., HBO)

The tragedy of the early days of the AIDS epidemic is recalled in Larry Kramer's play — now a movie — "The Normal Heart." In it, the lives of a group of gay New Yorkers are changed forever when, shortly into the summer party season on Fire Island, one of them becomes ill and quite suddenly dies. Novelist and screenwriter Ned Weeks (Mark Ruffalo) sees what is the beginning of a plague, and as the sick multiply exponentially, he gets all fired up and organizes with the help of his more timid cronies an organization that becomes the Gay Men's Health Crisis. Directed by Ryan Murphy ("Glee"; "American Horror Story") from Kramer's screenplay, the film is a powerful and painful reminder of a time in the city when the fear of sexual expression that was put to rest in the Stonewall riots came back stronger than ever as the medical community and families tried to grapple with the deaths of so many young gay men. An exceptional cast, including Julia Roberts, Taylor Kitsch, and Joe Mantello and Jim Parsons who both also starred in the 2011 Broadway revival, delivers on all fronts in the best movie HBO has made in years.

Mad Men (Sunday, 10 p.m., AMC)

What a short, strange trip it's been on "Mad Men." Don (Jon Hamm) was down, Don was out. But then he got his mojo back. He's working at Sterling Cooper again and his wife, Megan (Jessica Pare), has feelings for him again, even though she lives in LA. Harry Crane (Rich Sommer) has just made partner after proving his loyalty to Don and showing his colleagues TV advertising is where it's at. We are happy that Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) is friends with Don again. But where does this leave us on Sunday night? It looks like Lou Avery (Allan Havey) is here to stay; ditto Jim Cutler (Harry Hamlin) and Ted Chaough (Kevin Rahm). Maybe Roger (John Slattery) or Betty (January Jones) will do something crazy on the Season 7 mid-season finale.

Petals in the Wind (Monday, 9 p.m., Lifetime)

There's always been quite a following for "Flowers in the Attic." The popularity of the first novel in the V.C. Andrews series led to the sequel "Petals in the Wind," which comes to Lifetime this week. The action picks up a decade after "Attic," with siblings Cathy (Rose McIver), Christopher (Wyatt Nash) and Carrie (Bailey Buntain) having escaped from their grandparents' attic at Foxworth Hall. Cathy finds herself in an abusive relationship, and she and her brother face the forbidden feelings they developed for each other while coming of age during captivity. Later on, Cathy returns to Foxworth Hall to confront her grandmother (Ellen Burstyn) and seek revenge on her mother (Heather Graham, with Dylan Bruce) with a plan to seduce her husband.

Meanwhile, homegrown terrorist Margot Al-Harazi (guest star Michelle Fairley) reveals her demands — revenge for her husband's death in a US airstrike. Brooklyn's Barclays Center was the scene of the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The inductees this year were Peter Gabriel, the E Street Band, Linda Ronstadt, Cat Stevens, KISS, Nirvana and Daryl Hall & John Oates.
