Yankees’ Girardi: Give Brian McCann more time

Joe Girardi wasn't fretting about Brian McCann's anemic batting average because the Yankees manager hadn't noticed the catcher's mental outlook sag.

"I haven't seen a big change in his personality. Obviously, I will continue to watch,'' said Girardi, whose first year as a Yankee in 1996 started slowly at the plate. "I don't think he has swung the bat as poorly as his numbers have said. Sometimes you run into hard luck. He hit two balls on the screws [Wednesday] and had nothing to show for it. I am pretty convinced it will turn around.''

Entering Thursday night's 4-1 win over the Red Sox, McCann was hitting .152 (5-for-33) in eight games and .154 (2-for-13) with runners in scoring position.

Those numbers changed in the fourth when he rifled an RBI single to right that scored Jacoby Ellsbury with the game's first run and stopped an 0-for-14 skid.

"It felt great. I had been feeling good at the plate and hadn't had the results,'' said McCann, who went 1-for-3 on the night, but is still hitting .167.

"If you see a player trying too hard or it's getting to him too much, that's when you should talk to him,'' Girardi said.

After losing Josh Hamilton for six-to-eight weeks with a wrist injury, the Angels are looking for outfield help and a talent evaluator not with the Angels or Yankees believes Ichiro Suzuki to Anaheim "makes sense'' for the Angels.

Nevertheless, according to a person with knowledge of the Angels' plans, they will try to fill the void from within.
Reduced to a defensive replacement/pinch runner, Ichiro makes $6.5 million this season, which the Yankees likely would have to swallow a big part of in order to move him. After not playing Thursday, Ichiro has started three of the Yankees' 10 games and is batting .429 (6-for-14).
At the end of spring training, the Yankees played Ichiro extensively in center field hoping to showcase him for a club with a need, but nothing developed.

Mark Teixeira, who is recovering from a strained right hamstring, took dry swings in the indoor batting cage.
"They are doing stretching and treatment and riding the bike,'' Girardi said of the first baseman who is on the disabled list with a right hamstring problem. "Nothing on the field just yet.''
Teixeira is eligible to come off the DL April 20 when the Yankees finish a four-game series against the Rays in St. Petersburg.

The Yankees' win was just their fourth in 15 games against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium since the start of the 2013 season.

Conversations with Joe Torre haven't helped Girardi get a better idea of the blocking of home plate rule. Girardi had hoped to get something definitive in writing after being confused last weekend in Toronto about the way the rule is interpreted. The rule reads catchers can't block the plate unless they have the ball, and there is a lot of wiggle room in the wording.
"I have had conversations but no more clarity,'' Girardi said. "It's just not the league making decisions. It involves the union and lawyers. To get this ironed out on the wording has not taken place yet.''
