Van Gundy: Kerr would be good coach

Jeff Van Gundy gave his blessing to Steve Kerr to be the next Knicks head coach.

Van Gundy, the former Knicks coach, figured to be a candidate once Mike Woodson got fired at season's end, but that was before Phil Jackson took over as Knicks president. Jackson and Van Gundy didn't always see eye to eye when they battled in the Knicks-Bulls series.

It is difficult to imagine Jackson hiring anyone with whom he doesn't already have a close relationship as he figures to be hands-on next season.

"I think [Kerr] has every quality you need to be an outstanding head coach,'' Van Gundy told The Post. "I see the combination of he and Jackson having the type of relationship that would bring unity to the organization that is necessary to have a chance to win big consistently.''

Van Gundy once called Jackson "Big Chief Triangle'' for his obsession with the triangle offense he now wants to bring to New York after successful runs in Chicago and Los Angeles. Jackson once fired back at Van Gundy calling him "a fly on the wall'' and "Van Gumby.''

The Post reported in December Van Gundy would be on owner James Dolan's list as he had forgiven the former coach for abruptly resigning early in the 2000-2001 season. Van Gundy is said to want to coach again now that his daughter is heading to college.

But Van Gundy is going to want to be his own coach.

"There is nothing to clear up from my point of view,'' Van Gundy said. "It was just competition. I hope it goes well for Phil there and with Steve too. He is a great person.''

It's doubtful any veteran coach would feel too comfortable under the Jackson's constraints. Plus there's the spectre Jackson may decide he's healthy enough to coach again. (His fiancée, Jeanie Buss, thinks he is).

Nate McMillan, the Pacers assistant, is well-respected by Jackson. Pacers head coach Frank Vogel is rumored to be on the hot seat of the Pacers lose in the first round, as is the Warriors' Mark Jackson.

If Mark Jackson is fired, the Knicks could lose out on Kerr to Golden State. Kerr has been in New York since Friday, will be broadcasting Sunday's Toronto-Nets game and was expected to have met with Jackson.
