Over the phone now, with The Rumble's Steve Serby, Dylan Sherwyn talks about being across the room watching the 2004 NFL Draft on television in a small area outside the Garden's Play by Play Garden. Manning was doing several one-on-one interviews following a mass media interview session inside the Play by Play Club.

"Eli was in that pit area, he was still wearing his Chargers hat," Dylan said, "and [then-NFL commissioner Paul] Tagliabue came on and announced that he was traded, and I'm looking over there,
I'm still seeing Eli with his Chargers hat, he's still talking about being a Charger."

The boy turned to his father and asked, "Should I tell him he got traded?"

His father told him, "Yeah, go for it."

So Dylan, 11 at the time, went for it.

"So I ran over to the crowd of reporters and screamed out, 'Eli just got traded to the Giants!' "

What was Eli's reaction?

"He looked kind of stunned, I remember, and then within two seconds he got swallowed [by media], and I kind of ran out, because at that time I was pretty little, so I didn't want to get knocked over," Dylan said.

Back in Florida the next day, Manning was quoted in a newspaper article taking about how he had learned about the trade. His father contacted Pat Hanlon from Giants public relations department, and Dylan was invited to the Jets-Giants preseason game months later.

"After that preseason game, one of the Giants' staff members came and grabbed us, went down to the locker room, he signed my jersey for me and my sister, took some pictures, signed the article, talked to him for a little bit," Dylan recalled. "I'm not sure if you remember that game, but he also got smacked, and it cost him the starting job pretty much because [Kurt] Warner played much better than he did. I guess he was like pretty much my age [now] at that point, still pretty much a kid, and still could not have been nicer, and was awesome about everything."

What was Sherwyn doing at the NFL Draft? His father had gotten to know Leslie Hammond of the NFL, who was living upstairs from him in Manhattan.

What is Sherwyn, now 22, doing today? He is graduating next weekend from Michigan with a degree in sports management.

Dylan grew up in Basking Ridge, N.J. He and his father, a Jets-ticket holder, were Jets fans. Of course, Dylan became a Jets and Eli fan at the same time.

Did Dylan have a recent message for Manning?

"I'm glad that he's been so successful, couldn't happen to a better guy," Dylan said. "The way he treated me after that game is something I'll never forget. That's something I remember more than me telling him he got traded."

Family affair

Eric Young Jr. and his dad, Eric Young, will share another memory this week when Young Jr. and his Mets invade Denver for a four-game with the Rockies, whose first base coach is the elder Young.

"My favorite memory is when we played against each other for two games in spring training toward the end of my dad's career," said Young Jr. "I was a minor leaguer with the Rockies and dad was with San Diego.

"I hit a triple in the first game. I heard my father yelling from the bench 'Run, Run' and then he stopped because he realized we weren't on the same team. It was pretty funny."

Young Jr. said he is sure he will have dinner with his father each day they re in Colorado.

"We will meet on the field pregame and hug each other," he said. "We stay in touch throughout the season."
