No traces of pine tar, Pineda stymies Cubs

No pine tar, no problem for Michael Pineda.

After stirring up some controversy in his previous outing when a brown, sticky substance appeared on his right palm, Pineda took the mound Wednesday with what appeared to be a clean hand — and was excellent again in the Yankees' 2-0 win over the Cubs at the Stadium.

Earlier, Cubs manager Rick Renteria said he would monitor Pineda.

"Will I?" Renteria said before the doubleheader began. "A lot's been made of that. I guess if it's something that we should keep our eye on it would be foolish for me to say that we wouldn't be looking for it. … If we see it, if it's noticeable, if it's something that affects the outcome of how he's able to command the pitches."

Pineda removed the substance after the fourth inning against the Red Sox last Thursday and Major League Baseball reached out to the Yankees about the incident, but didn't discipline Pineda. The Red Sox said they had no issue with Pineda, who said he only used dirt on his hand.

Since nothing was visible Wednesday night on Pineda's hand, the Cubs didn't do anything. And they didn't do anything at the plate against him, either.

Pineda, who pitched six scoreless innings, retired the first seven batters he faced before Ryan Kalish singled to left in the third.

His biggest test came in the fifth when he surrendered consecutive hits to start the inning. Wellington Castro followed with an ill-advised sacrifice bunt. Though he successfully moved the runners over, it brought up the Cubs' two weakest hitters in the lineup. Pineda responded by striking out Kalish and then getting Darwin Barney to fly out to shallow center to end the threat.

John Ryan Murphy said he was familiar with Pineda's stuff after catching him while they were with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last season.

"I know what he's capable of," Murphy said before making his season debut with the Yankees on Wednesday and helping Pineda's cause by throwing out Anthony Rizzo as he tried to steal second to end the fourth. "So what he's doing lately doesn't surprise me."
