LIRR service suspended after person was struck by train

All service on the LIRR's Port Jefferson Branch was suspended Wednesday morning after a person was struck by a train.

The railroad says the accident occurred east of the Smithtown station early Wednesday morning but did not give a specific time.

All service is suspended between Port Jefferson and Huntington, but buses will be provided, the railroad said.

The condition of the victim was not immediately known – but the LIRR said on its Web site at 8 a.m. that the medical examiner was on the scene, suggesting a possible fatality.

LIRR advised customers to use the Ronkonkoma Branch or travel to Huntington Station for westbound service.
