The Jets moved another step closer to adding free agent running back Chris Johnson on Tuesday.
Johnson is visiting the Jets' Florham Park training center, a source confirmed. The running back was released by the Titans last week. This is his first known visit to a team.
Johnson, 28, has rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his six NFL seasons. In 2009, he rushed for 2,006 yards, becoming the sixth member of the 2K Club. He gained 1,077 yards last year on 279 carries and had six touchdowns.
Tennessee parted ways with Johnson because of his large salary cap number and a dip in production. He was scheduled to make $8 million with the Titans this year before they released him.
The Jets view Johnson as a perfect complement to Chris Ivory and would give their running back corps some needed depth. Ivory was impressive in his first season with the Jets, but he frequently gets injured. The speedy Johnson is a workhorse. He has played in 16 games in each of the last five seasons.
The biggest questions with Johnson are how much money he will be seeking and whether he is willing to accept a role in which he is sharing carries.
The Jets begin their offseason program on Monday, so if they signed Johnson this week he could participate immediately.
