Accused murderer Oscar Pistorius knew it was illegal to shoot first and ask questions later, even if he believed a burglar was inside his home, a firearms expert said Monday.
Sean Patrick Rens, who has sold firearms to Pistorius, said the once-beloved Olympic hero always correctly answered state-mandated, gun-safety questions before buying weapons.
Every time, Pistorius – on trial for the Feb. 14, 2013 murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp – said he was aware of laws that bar lethal force unless the gun owner is confronted by an armed intruder, Rens testified.
"`No, life is not in danger,' " Rens said, quoting Pistorius' oft-repeated answer to various safety questions.
Rens also told the court about a 2012 incident when Pistorius was startled at home and went into "combat mode," drawing his weapon.
It turned out to be a noise from the laundry room.
"He went into what we call 'code red' or combat mode," said Rens, manager of the International Firearm Training Academy in Walkerville town.
"When he came to the source of the noise, it was the laundry or something."
The Blade Runner even joked about the incident on Twitter in November 2012: "Nothing like getting home to hear the washing machine on and thinking its (sic) an intruder to go into full combat recon mode into the pantry!"
Rens also testified that Pistorius has "a great love and enthusiasm" for guns.
Prosecutors want to prove their contention that Pistorius was well-versed in South African gun laws and still fired on Steenkamp after a bitter argument.
The defense admits Pistorius fatally shot Steenkamp through his bathroom door, but contend the runner believed he was shooting at an intruder.
Reeva Steenkamp's mom June was in court for Monday's testimony. She made brief eye contact with Pistorius and he nodded at her.
Pistorius' sister Aimee went to the grieving mom inside court and they appeared to have a brief, friendly conversation.
June Steenkamp left the Pretoria courtroom before a police photographer took the stand and described his work, taking pictures inside the bloody bathroom.
