PORT ST. LUCIE — It's Ruben Tejada or bust for the Mets.
That message was reaffirmed on Monday, when the club re-assigned Wilmer Flores to its minor league camp. Flores had begun playing shortstop in the last week as the Mets attempted to gauge whether he was suitable for the position.
"I feel good, I did a great job and I'll just wait for the opportunity to come again," said Flores, who batted .238 with two homers and nine RBIs this spring.
Flores is expected to shuffle between shortstop and second base at Triple-A Las Vegas. Veteran Omar Quintanilla likely will be the backup shortstop to begin the season for the Mets, behind Tejada.
Though the Mets have monitored outside options at shortstop such as free agent Stephen Drew, the club expects to begin the season with Tejada as the starting shortstop, according to team officials.
After a dreadful start to the Grapefruit League season, Tejada has shown life over the last week. Overall, he is batting .229 with a .270 on-base percentage this spring.
The Mets also optioned Zach Lutz, Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Matt den Dekker to the minors on Monday.
