ESPN NBA analyst Jon Barry talks Phil Jackson's arrival, Carmelo Anthony's potential departure and more with The Post's Justin Terranova.
Q: Any concerns about Jackson's lack of front-office experience?
A: He's a terrific basketball mind who obviously knows how to manage egos and talent, and how to get them to mesh. That's exactly what being a GM is all about. A lot of people say, 'well he hasn't been in this position.' I think when he coached he had a lot of input who was brought in to Chicago and L.A. … He'll do the same in bringing into players in New York who fit his system.
Q: Can Carmelo Anthony fit into the triangle offense?
A: I think he'll be great. I think you have to have that alpha dog, that big-time scorer. It was Michael Jordan for all those years and then Kobe Bryant in L.A. Certainly, Carmelo is that type of guy. For all the talk of him exploring free agency, it certainly sounds like the way he's talking that he's resigned to returning to the Knicks. He's already saying he'd change his game, listen to Phil Jackson.
Q: Can Jackson have the same effect on the Knicks that Pat Riley did with the Heat when it comes to free agency?
A: There's a mystique around Phil Jackson. I remember as a player and working out for Pat Riley and the Heat. To me, he was an imposing figure to me. He was a revered name in NBA basketball. I think Phil will have that effect with New York.
Q: Are the Nets the biggest threat to the Heat and Pacers in the Heat in the East?
A: They are 3-0 against the Heat, but I don't put a whole lot of stock in that. They pose some matchup difficulties, and (Kevin) Garnett really hasn't been a factor in those games. If he comes back healthy then they are third best in the East, but I just don't think anyone is going to touch Indiana or Miami.
Q: Are the Spurs the best out West?
A: I think they are better than they were last year. I think Gregg Popovich has done a great job managing minutes. (Manu) Ginobili is better than he was last year. He's not the Ginobili of old, but he really struggled last year. … Kawhi Leonard's had the injuries, so they haven't had him most of the year, but he's a more competent player, established guy now. San Antonio is the team to beat.
