ObamaCare has enrolled more than 5 million people nationwide, but it won't rescue the city's municipal hospitals because more than 60 percent of their uninsured patients are undocumented immigrants who can't sign up.
"If these estimates are accurate, it seems unlikely that this uninsured patient base will shrink dramatically anytime soon," said Christina Fiorentini of the Independent Budget Office.
The watchdog estimates that the Health and Hospitals Corp. will post $640 million in operating losses this year, which could grow to $1.8 billion in 2018. One-third of its 475,627 uninsured patients in 2013 were aliens.
