Cruz ‘excited’ about Giants hiring McAdoo

This past season, the Giants' offense floundered, ranking 28th in the NFL in both points and yards per game.

A broken offense needed to be fixed, and last week, the Giants hired former Packers quarterback coach Ben McAdoo as their new offensive coordinator to replace Kevin Gilbride, who retired after seven years in the position.

Victor Cruz, who fell just shy of 1,000 receiving yards when his season ended early due to injury, was happy the team hired McAdoo.

"I was excited for it," the wide receiver said Monday at Macy's in Herald Square where he was on hand to promote the NFL Shop at Super Bowl. "Obviously, it's tough to see Gilbride go. He was like a mentor to me, but you always want to get someone that you feel is good for the job.

"We look at Green Bay and they're a [high-powered] offense. We're potentially going to bring some of that to us and we're definitely all for that."

McAdoo will represent a new voice and a set of fresh eyes, something Cruz thinks the team will benefit from.

"I think it's good for us mentally as receivers and as an offense to get a guy that understands what we go through from our standpoint, and we can talk to him, and things like that," he said. "I think it's good to just get a fresh face in there and see how things go."

Cruz had told The Post earlier this month that should the Giants hire Mike Sullivan — the Giants' wide receiver coach from 2004 to 2009 and the quarterbacks coach in 2010 and 2011 before becoming the Buccaneers offensive coordinator — he would approve.

However, the team hired the unproven McAdoo, who has yet to call an NFL play in his career.

"That's a decision that the front office makes and I have no part in that," Cruz said. "Obviously, Sullivan was somebody that I knew from his tenure with the Giants when I was there, and a guy I was obviously pulling for because of my connection with him."

When he took the job, McAdoo said the Giants would be "an up-tempo, attacking-style offense" — words that are like salsa music to Cruz's ears.

"I'm for all [going] up-tempo, getting a lot of catches, making a lot of plays," he said. "That's what I want to do — that's kind of right up my alley. I'm excited to hear that, and I'm excited to get in there and learn the offense and get it going."

With unrestricted free agent Hakeem Nicks uncertain to return, the Giants will look to Jernel Jernigan, who impressed at the end of this past season, to replace Nicks' production, should he leave.

Cruz is excited to see what Jernigan can do given the chance to play regularly.

"I think he's going to be given a lot more opportunities and [more] chances to make plays," he said. "We need all the weapons we can get, so the more people out there catching the football and making plays, the better."

Cruz said he could offer no insight into Nicks' plans.

"I plan on giving him a call, just to say hello, say 'What's up?' to him like I usually do, so we'll see," he said.
