An off-duty volunteer firefighter from Long Island made the save of his life early Tuesday, dragging two injured people away from a burning car just before it exploded, cops said.
Eastport Bravest Joseph Tortorice was driving along Sunrise Highway in East Moriches around 1 a.m. when the other vehicle skidded off the freeway and into a patch of woods, said Suffolk County cops.
Tortorice saw the crashed car's taillights among the tree branches and pulled over. He ran over to find two people lying next to the 2000 VW Jetta, cops said.
With seconds to spare, Tortorice dragged a male passenger, 27, and the female driver, 23, away from the car as its engine erupted into flames, officials said.
Cops speculated that the victims — who suffered non-life-threatening injuries — might not have been able to crawl from the scene had Tortorice not shown up and pulled them away.
The stretch of roadway was all but deserted during the early morning hour, and no other passersby had noticed the wreck or stopped to help the victims.
Police said there was no criminality involved in the 1:14 a.m. crash, which occurred near Exit 61 when the female driver likely lost control of her vehicle.
The unidentified victims, both from Riverhead, were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital.
