Charitable donations boomed during Bloomberg’s tenure

A staggering $2.8 billion in charitable donations poured into the city's coffers during his 12 years in office, Mayor Bloomberg said.

The largest chunk, about $900 million, headed to parks.

Another $500 million was raised for the World Trade Center memorial.

And $1.4 billion ended up with the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City, the Fund for Public Health and the Fund for Public Schools, which went to build hospitals, plant trees and help Hurricane Sandy victims.

"You know, New York's a very generous place," Bloomberg said on his weekly radio show Friday.

The billionaire didn't say how much he himself contributed.

Philanthropy experts said no city in the United States has experienced the level of largesse that Bloomberg and his Rolodex of rich pals brought in.

"You will never see those kinds of numbers again — in any city,'' predicted Rick Cohen, national correspondent for Nonprofit Quarterly. "What you have is a mayor who operates at the top echelon of American philanthropy."
