9:45 a.m.
President Kennedy, with Vice President Johnson and others, walks across the street from Fort Worth's Texas Hotel to address a crowd: "Ladies and gentlemen, there are no faint hearts in Fort Worth, and I appreciate, I appreciate, your being here this morning. Mrs. Kennedy is organizing herself, it takes longer, but of course she looks better than we do when she does it …" Afterward, the president shakes hands with supporters. They return to the hotel for a Chamber of Commerce breakfast, where JFK makes what would be his last public speech. His talks about national security and defense. But he begins with another quip about his wife: "Two years ago, I introduced myself in Paris by saying that I was the man who had accompanied Mrs. Kennedy to Paris. I am getting somewhat that same sensation as I travel around Texas. Nobody wonders what Lyndon and I wear."
Noon
The presidential party leaves the hotel and travels by motorcade to Carswell Air Force Base for the short flight to Dallas.
12:37 p.m.
Arriving at Love Field, President and Mrs. Kennedy disembark and greet a crowd of well-wishers. The first lady receives a bouquet of red roses, which she carries to the waiting limousine.
1:15 p.m.
Parade starts in downtown Dallas.
1:29 p.m.
Presidential motorcade turns into Dealy Plaza.
1:30 p.m.
JFK and Gov. Connally shot.

UPI bulletin filed by reporter Albert Merriman Smith, riding in the motorcade: "THREE SHOTS WERE FIRED AT PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S MOTORCADE IN DOWNTOWN DALLAS."

1:36 p.m.
The wounded president arrives at Parkland Hospital. Don Gardiner reports on the ABC Radio Network: "We interrupt this program to bring you a special bulletin from ABC Radio: Here is a special bulletin from Dallas, Texas. Three shots were fired at President Kennedy;s motorcade today in downtown Dallas, Texas. This is ABC Radio." Gardiner repeats the bulletin, adding "The president now making a two-day speaking tour of Texas. We're going to stand by for more details . ."
1:40 p.m.
CBS breaks into a live broadcast of the soap "As the World Turns" with the first bulletin on TV, read by Walter Cronkite while the screen shows a CBS News sign. "Here is a bulletin from CBS News. In Dallas, Texas, three shots were fired at President Kennedy's motorcade in downtown Dallas. The first reports say the President Kennedy has been seriously wounded by this shooting." Cronkite goes on, "More details have just arrived . . . United Press says the wound for Mr. Kennedy perhaps could be fatal." A commercial for New Minute Brew Nescafe coffee follows, along with a promo for Nu Soft fabric softener and for the TV show "Route 66." Another bulletin follows, then CBS goes back to its soap opera.
1:48 p.m.
This time on camera, Cronkite returns to the air with his report, confirming to America that President Kennedy is dead.
2:00 p.m.
President Kennedy officially pronounced dead.
2:15 p.m.
Lee Harvey Oswald shoots and kills police officer J.D. Tippit while he is on the run.

2:26 p.m.
Lyndon Johnson leaves for the airport.
2:33 p.m.
Acting White House press secretary Malcolm Kilduff makes the official announcement of President Kennedy's death to reporters gathered in a nurses' classroom at the hospital: "President John F. Kennedy died at approximately 1:00 CST today, here in Dallas. He died of a gunshot wound to the brain. I have no other details regarding the assassination of the president."
2:37 p.m.
Walter Cronkite on the air on CBS: "From Dallas, Texas, the flash, apparently official. President Kennedy died at 1 p.m. Central Standard Time, 2 o'clock Eastern Standard Time." He pauses and looks at the studio clock. "Some 38 minutes ago." Cronkite takes off his glasses, clears his throat and adds, "Vice President Lyndon Johnson will presumably take the oath of office to become the 36th president of the United States."
2:50 p.m.
Lee Harvey Oswald is arrested inside the Texas Theater movie house where he was hiding. "War Is Hell" and "Cry of Battle" is playing there in a double feature.
3:00 p.m.
President Kennedy's body is brought to Air Force One.
3:38 p.m.
Lyndon Johnson sworn in as president onboard Air Force One at Love Air Force Base. Mrs. Kennedy, in her blood-stained dress, stands to his left as he takes the oath.

6:00 p.m.
Presidential plane with Kennedy's body, Mrs. Kennedy and the new president arrives at Andrews Air Force Base. Mrs. Kennedy, accompanying her husband's casket leave first before President Johnson makes a brief statement on the tarmac: "This is a sad time for all people … I will do my best; that is all I can do. I ask for your help and God's."
