Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday accepted a Russian proposal to put his country's chemical weapons arsenal under international control.
Iran and China immediately backed the 11th hour proposal, which comes as President Obama and Congress continue to struggle with how to respond to the Syrian government's deadly gas attack on civilians.
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said Tuesday after meeting with Russian officials that his government quickly "agreed to the Russian initiative," adding that Syria cooperated to "uproot U.S. aggression."
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Tuesday that Russia is now working with Syria to prepare a detailed plan of action, which will be presented shortly.
Obama called the yet-to-be formulated plan a "potentially positive development" " in an interview Monday with CBS News.
"Let's see if they're serious," Obama said. "But we have to make sure that we can verify it and enforce it, and if in fact we're able to achieve that kind of agreement that has Russia's agreement and the [United Nations] Security Council's agreement, then my central concern in this whole episode is resolved."
Lavrov said that Russia will then be ready to complete the plan together with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
Israeli officials, meanwhile, were skeptical of the deal between Syria and its longtime ally and sponsor.
