Harvey, a boxer, was a wedding gift to Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Becall from author and screenwriter Louis Bromfield. "Harvey was really smart," Bacall said of this 1946 shot. "He knew he wasn't allowed to get on the furniture, so he would only put two paws on at a time, and he would sit between us if we had a fight."

Child star Jackie Cooper was given Spot as an 11th birthday present. In 1931, two years before this picture was taken, Cooper starred in the film "Skippy," directed by his uncle, Norman Taurog. To get Cooper to cry, Taurog ordered that Spot be taken away backstage by a security guard, who pretended to shoot it. Cooper became the youngest person ever to be nominated for an Oscar (a title he held until 1979), but he did not forgive his uncle for many years.

"It was my 4th birthday and my father gave me a beautiful grey poodle," Liza Minnelli tells The Post of this 1950 shot. "When he handed it to me he said, 'What do you want to name him?' and I instantly said 'John Cook'! I have no idea why, but Daddy loved it."

In 1930, Buster Keaton was part of the MGM studio system, which exerted control over its stars private lives. After Keaton was forced to rent a bungalow on the MGM lot, he hung a sign outside that said "Keaton's Kennel." He said it was in honor of his Saint Bernard, but it soon became famous as an anti-establishment watering hole. Keaton's dog Elmer had it better off — he was taken on walks by Greta Garbo.
