Officials have cancelled an electronic music festival on Randall's Island after two people died and four other event-goers were hospitalized in critical condition.
A man and a woman, both from out-of-town, died Saturday from unknown causes but officials suspect ecstasy in both deaths during the Electric Zoo music festival, police said.
The festival began Friday and was scheduled to continue through today.
"The Electric Zoo organizers have worked with City officials to reduce health risks at this event, but in view of these occurrences, the safest course is to cancel the remaining day of the event," the NYPD said in a written statement.
The first death came around 3 a.m., yesterday, when a 23-year-old man from Upstate was pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital after being taken by ambulance from Randall's Island.
The second fatality occurred around 10:45 p.m., last night, when a 20-year-old woman from Rhode Island died at Metropolitan Hospital, authorities said.
Several other people have fallen ill and at least four are in critical condition at area hospitals, police said.
