When Matt Ryan receives a scholarship offer or is contacted by a college coach, he immediately picks up the phone or relays the message to Ty Jerome, his high school and AAU teammate who does the same.
The two Iona Prep and New Heights standouts motivate the other that way, all in good fun.
"It's a little competition between me and him," Ryan said. "We've come a long way, and we're still growing as friends."
The duo, indeed, have enjoyed a huge summer, landing scores of scholarship offers while developing chemistry they hope will benefit Iona Prep during the upcoming season.
The 6-foot-6 Ryan, a rising junior who has in-the-gym range, has become a hot commodity among high-major programs. Notre Dame, Clemson, West Virginia, Arizona, Pittsburgh, Iowa State and Providence are among his suitors.
"If there are five better shooters in the country, I'd be surprised," New Heights coach Chris Alesi said of Ryan, who has garnered 22 scholarship offers.
Jerome's recruitment, meanwhile, has picked up steam as of late. The soon-to-be sophomore combo guard has landed offers from Stony Brook, Manhattan, Fordham and Hofstra, and he has impressed coaches with his perimeter shooting, instincts and ability to shine — even while playing up against older competition.
"It's preparing me for the varsity level," he said.
Jerome, who began his freshman year on the junior varsity, but played so well he got moved up to the varsity by the end of the year, initially intended to spend the summer with powerhouse Team SCAN. He ended up with New Heights, partly to further grow the bond he and Ryan had developed.
The two have taken a handful of unofficial visits and plan to take more in the coming months. College, however, is a long way off. For now, they are focused on their immediate plans: turning Iona Prep, which isn't known as a basketball powerhouse, into a winner.
"After we're done at Iona, we want to leave a legacy as top basketball players," Ryan said.
* Wings Academy point guard Desure Buie, a rising junior, landed a scholarship offer from Rhode Island, his eighth. Seton Hall and Rhode Island, among others, had already extended offers.
* Highly ranked Bronx wing Terry Larrier, who attends the Phelps School in Philadelphia, cut his list to 10 schools: Seton Hall, St. John's, VCU, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Minnesota, UConn, Penn State and Marquette. He visited VCU yesterday.
* Lincoln shooting guard Isaiah Whitehead, the city's top rising senior, has a top six of Syracuse, Minnesota, UCLA, Arizona, St. John's and Miami. He plans to take official visits to Syracuse, UCLA and Arizona beginning in September.
* Cardinal Hayes soon-to-be senior forward Mustafa Jones landed scholarship offers from Central Connecticut State and LIU-Brooklyn, to go along with a handful of existing mid-major ones. He plans to visit East Carolina this month.
