He walked away from Citi Field Wednesday night. He came back yesterday. Both times, he looked fine. But any time a Matt Harvey takes a line drive off his knee, you understand why the Mets feel anything but fine.
So before Thursday's matinee, there was relief.
"Everything is fine," Harvey said. "I woke up (with) no issues at all, totally fine and – as I knew (Wednesday) night - everything is OK this morning. I woke up and everything is fine."
And you were worried.
With two outs in the ninth inning, Harvey took a Charlie Blackmon liner off his right kneecap. The ball caromed into right field. Harvey waved off manager Terry Collins and the trainer and after one warm-up pitch, resumed what would be his first complete game, a shutout. Harvey iced the knee and wore a bruise pad overnight. He arrived in the clubhouse without a limp, giving fellow pitcher Zack Wheeler a playful hip-check as he walked in.
"Like I said, everything's fine. I don't feel anything,'' said Harvey, who should get an extra day's rest before his next start with Jon Niese returning Sunday and the Mets going back to a six-man rotation.
The Mets' caution was understandable, what with David Wright (hamstring) and Bobby Parnell (herniated disc) recent disabled list additions.

It's bigger than big.
"This might be, in my time here, maybe the toughest road trip we've had to face," Collins said of the next 11 games – three at Arizona starting tonight, three at the Dodgers, three at San Diego and an Aug. 19 makeup in Minnesota.

Collins was talking about guys stepping up. Repeatedly, he has said how Marlon Byrd has been a driving force. But yesterday he noted, "Marlon has cooled off a little bit. He may be completely gassed. There's a time on every team during the season when somebody else has to step up and pick up the load."
Byrd disagreed.
"Going out and playing baseball I have no complaints whatsoever. Being tired, everybody's tired this time of year. You go out there and you play hard. If you've got 50 percent, you give 100 percent of 50," Byrd said.
