Ferry services from Brooklyn to Lower Manhattan extended through January

Brooklyn straphangers reeling from the shutdown of the R train to Manhattan will now be able to count on ferry service until next year, sources told the Post.

The service, which runs from the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park to Wall Street in Lower Manhattan, had started earlier this month and was scheduled to run through Labor Day.

It has now been extended to run through January to help riders cope with the R-train shut down while the MTA repairs the Montague Tube after it was badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy, sources added.

Speaker Quinn told the Post she was thrilled that southern Brooklyn residents would continue to have ferry service.

"Ferries are a smart, fast and green way to get around New York City, and a needed alternative for commuters who must wait 15 months for the return of the R train," she said. "As the repair work of tunnels damaged by Sandy continues, the extension of this ferry service will help some of the 65,000 subway riders a day find another way to get to and from work."
