After partying late at the Hotel du Cap, Sean "Diddy" Combs was all business Wednesday morning, striding onto the main stage at Cannes Lion in a sharp suit and with his friend, Translation CEO Steve Stoute. The producer, fashion mogul and liquor lord is in Cannes to pitch the fall launch of his music cable network Revolt TV. Combs said MTV's decision seven years ago to stop playing music videos was devastating, but it forced artists to find other digital means to promote their work. Combs explained, "For music, you just had to go into the abyss or the stratosphere with no plan, no destination. I was trying to get myself booked on 'Dancing with the Stars' because there was no place for me to go to tell my story." The Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment Group founder and CEO was interviewed by Stoute after refusing to go on stage with The Guardian's Michael Wolff (who explained on USA Today.com, "I got fired after a little back and forth about keeping Sean 'comfortable.'") Asked by Stoute which marketers and brands inspire him, Combs mentioned Richard Branson and the new Jay-Z Samsung campaign. "I hate watching commercials just like anybody else," he said to laughs. "That's why the best creatives win awards here. And if you ain't going to be great, you need to go home and get the [bleep] out the room!" He added, "Anyone who is here from Apple, Samsung is on that ass." And to critics who say music networks don't work, "All I can do is get up in the morning and try to make it possible," he said. "So, I wish myself luck," adding, "But I need your help."
