Rogers ‘pretty close’ to joining Kidd’s staff

Jason Kidd is on the verge of adding the first member of his Nets coaching staff.

Roy Rogers — who, as a member of Lawrence Frank's staff, worked with Brook Lopez during the Net center's first two years in the league, is "pretty close" to joining Kidd, multiple league sources confirmed last night.

Kidd has targeted and identified Rogers, who played with four teams in a four-season NBA career, and Frank, the former Nets and Pistons head coach, as two men he wanted for his staff. Talks are on-going with Frank, who still is owed two seasons of pay from the Pistons.

With Rogers teaching and instructing with the Nets from 2008-10, Lopez enjoyed his two best rebounding seasons, averaging 8.1 rebounds as a rookie and 8.6 his second year. Lopez publicly credited Rogers numerous times.

One of Rogers' biggest strengths is player development, an area in which the Nets were criticized last season.

Rogers and Frank worked together on Doc Rivers' staff in Boston. Rogers, 39, followed Frank to Detroit and was a member of his staff there.

With Kidd embarking on his first coaching job — and it's a head coaching position as well — both he and Nets brass want to surround him with an experienced staff.

When Kidd threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Yankees game Wednesday, he said Rogers and Frank were two candidates he interviewed. He has applied a full court press in an attempt to sway Frank.

"I've always respected Coach Frank. He's the reason I kind of publicly recruited him because I really need him and want him," Kidd said. "I guess I'm kind of that college recruiter right now because he brings a lot to the table. He's had success here, understands the good and bad and so again I'm recruiting him to come join my staff."

With the Pistons, as he did with the Nets, Rogers won praise for his work with young big men, specifically Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe. A 6-foot-10 forward out of Alabama who was a first-round pick of the Grizzlies in 1996, Rogers averaged 4.8 points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 48 percent in his NBA career.
