A man is fighting for his life after a car jumped a curb and smashed into a deli in the East Village, authorities said.
The driver lost control of his white Nissan Altima on Second Avenue near Fourth Street about 7 a.m., and drove into the East Village Grocery, hitting four people, according to witnesses and police.
Three of those injured worked at the deli, which had recently reopened after a fire last year. The most seriously hurt, a worker named Ali, had been setting up the flower stand when he was mowed down.
He was listed in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital, and the other workers were stable, cops said. A bicyclist was also struck, and was listed in stable condition.
"It just went on the sidewalk, and started destroying everything, just went out of control," said a witness named Andrew, who declined to give his last name. "I saw people flying around. A lot of bicycles got destroyed."
Cops said the driver was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment, and is in police custody.
