Donnie dodging rough patch in return to Bronx

Don Mattingly didn't get the job when he interviewed to become Yankees manager five years ago, but that doesn't mean the Dodgers manager is ruling out the possibility of ever returning to The Bronx.

"I can see myself managing anywhere, honestly," Mattingly said when asked if he ever could return to the Yankees down the road.

Nevertheless, Mattingly said he is glad to be with the Dodgers.

"I'm where I want to be," Mattingly said before last night's game was rained out in what would have been the Dodgers' first game in The Bronx since winning the World Series in 1981. "I want to do a great job for our organization. If they don't think I'm the guy for them or the right guy, then I want to keep managing, I'll say that. That's for sure."

His third season in Los Angeles has been particularly challenging, with the high-priced squad sitting at the bottom of the NL West with a 29-39 mark.

"I love what I'm doing, even with as tough as this year has been," Mattingly said. "I'm not going to sit here and say I want to come back here or anywhere else. I like where I'm at. I want to be there. ... The only thing that pushes me away from there is if they don't want me.

"We'll see what door opens next. Hopefully there's another door that opens."

Last night was Mattingly's first time in the new Stadium in an opposing uniform after coming once in 2009 before a Mets game and again a year later for the unveiling of George Steinbrenner's plaque.

"It doesn't feel any different," Mattingly said. "It's not the building, it's the people."

Mattingly also said his years with the Yankees kept him from being overwhelmed during this turbulent season, when his job security has been in question.

"I had a good training ground, put it that way," Mattingly said of his time in the spotlight and with Steinbrenner in charge. "I think George liked controversy. I kind of grew up, in a sense, with it, but it still doesn't prepare you for it. You just weather it."

* The Yankees reportedly have acquired outfielder Fernando Martinez from the Astros in exchange for Charles Basford, a 22-year-old right-hander, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Martinez — a former top prospect in the Mets' farm system who was rated the 20th-best prospect in the game by Baseball America in 2008 — has not met those early expectations because of chronic injuries. Basford was pitching for Single-A Staten Island.

Martinez hit just .219 for Triple-A Round Rock this season.

* Because Mark Teixeira (wrist) has returned to the DL, the Yankees recalled outfielder Zoilo Almonte.

"He's a switch-hitter and an outfielder," Girardi said. "We can give him a start here or use him as a pinch hitter."

They also recalled Adam Warren and designated right-hander Chris Bootcheck for assignment. Warren will return to his long reliever spot.

* Alex Rodriguez looked at live pitching yesterday, but didn't take swings.

"He just tracked pitches," Girardi said. "I'm sure each day he'll do a little bit more."
