Major crime up in two of three Nassau County police precincts: report

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 17 April 2013 | 20.49

Major crime has increased in two of the three Nassau County police precincts that merged last year in a cost-cutting measure.

Newsday compares figures from Jan. 1 to April 1 of this year and the same period last year.

It says major crime went up nearly 19 percent at Nassau's northwest precinct. It went up nearly 11 percent at the southwest precinct.

The opposite occurred at the northeast precinct, where major crime is down by nearly 15 percent.

PBA President James Carver says the figures validate the union's concerns that the mergers would increase crime.

But the department says county crime is at such low levels that just a handful of incidents can drive a percentage increase.
