Firefighters battling Bronx blaze; 10 people already hurt

Firefighters are battling a raging Bronx blaze that has already injured 10 people, including a child who was seriously hurt, authorities said.

The flames began about 7:40 a.m. on the fifth floor of a 27-story Melrose building on East 149th Street near Grand Concourse, according to an FDNY spokesman.

The child and three other people were seriously hurt and are being treated at Lincoln Hospital, authorities said.

Two of the Bravest were injured from smoke inhalation, the spokesman added.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the fire.

There are almost 500 apartments in the building, along with more than 20 stores.
