Tsonga: Women players ‘more unstable than us’

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has a theory as to why women's tennis top seeds seem to fall earlier in some draws than men do.

"You know, the girls, they are more unstable than us," Tsonga told reporters yesterday after a 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 loss to Roger Federer in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. "I'm sure everybody will say it's true, even the girls."

Tsonga, who also jokingly took a racket swing at Federer during their match, was asked why the men always seem to have the top four seeds in major semifinals. A reporter then followed up with a question about why it doesn't always seem to be that way for the women.

Tsonga didn't stop there.

"But, I mean, it's just about hormones and all this stuff," the Frenchman said. "We don't have all these bad things, so we are physically in a good shape every time, and you are not. That's it."

These views likely will draw the ire of Serena Williams and other female players. Williams, the No. 3 seed, slammed and broke her racket in a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 loss to No. 29 Sloane Stephens on Wednesday in a women's quarterfinal match.

In the men's semifinals, No. 1 Novak Djokovic faced No. 4 David Ferrer in a night match and No. 2 Federer takes on No. 3 Andy Murray tomorrow.
