GOLF: Gay wins playoff at Humana Challenge

Brian Gay clinched his fourth PGA Tour title by beating Charles Howell III and Swede David Lingmerth in a sudden-death playoff to win the Humana Challenge yesterday in LaQuinta, Calif.

Jamie Donaldson of Wales won the Abu Dhabi Championship by one shot after Justin Rose narrowly missed an eight-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have forced a playoff.

John Cook, who closed with 5-under 67, caught David Frost on the final hole of regulation, then beat him with birdie on the second playoff hole to win the Mitsubishi Electric Championship in Hawaii.

NFL: Replacements named for Pro Bowl

* Redskins linebackers London Fletcher and Ryan Kerrigan will head to Sunday's Pro Bowl in Hawaii as replacements for Super Bowl-bound 49ers linebackers Patrick Willis and Aldon Smith.

* Also added to the NFC roster was Buccaneers' rookie running back Doug Martin, who is taking the place of 49ers running back Frank Gore, and Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who is replacing Justin Smith. Raiders fullback Marcel Reece will replace the Ravens' Vonta Leach on the AFC's roster.

* Larry Fitzgerald of the Cardinals, Joe Thomas of the Browns and Jason Witten of the Cowboys are finalists for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award to be announced on Feb. 2.

nba: Kings could be sold to Seattle group

The Kings could be leaving Sacramento for Seattle after it was reported the Maloof family has agreed to sell the team to a Seattle group led by investor Chris Hansen. The deal, worth $525 million, is still pending approval from the NBA Board of Governors.

Lindsey Hunter, the Suns' player development director, was named as their interim coach after the team parted ways Friday with Alvin Gentry.

SOCCER: Dempsey's goal ties Man U

Clint Dempsey, the American forward from Texas, scored a second crucial goal of the season for Tottenham against Manchester United, striking in stoppage time to secure a 1-1 draw against the Premier League leaders. United remains atop the standings, but its lead has been trimmed to five points this weekend after second-place Manchester City beat Fulham 2-0 on Saturday.

COLLEGE: Ron Fraser dead at 79

Ron Fraser, the longtime University of Miami baseball coach known as "the wizard of college baseball,'' died yesterday after a long fight with Alzheimer's disease. He was 79.

Mark Helfrich, Oregon's offensive coordinator, was promoted to head coach to replace Chip Kelly.

Shenneika Smith, leading scorer for the St. John's women, was held to just three points and two rebounds in the Red Storm's 74-50 loss to No. 2 Notre Dame.

MLB: Chisox OK deal with Lindstrom

Free-agent reliever Matt Lindstrom and the White Sox agreed to a one-year contract. The right-hander pitched a combined 47 innings for Arizona and Baltimore last season, posting a 2.68 ERA with 40 strikeouts and 14 walks. He is 13-15 with a 3.64 ERA over six seasons.

Thomas Vanek scored twice and added three assists, and Jason Pominville had three assists in leading the Sabres to a 5-2 season-opening win over the visiting Flyers.

Forward Joffrey Lupul signed a five-year contract extension with the Maple Leafs.
