The worst deadbeat dad in the country — a Long Island man who owes more than $1.2 million in child support — has been nabbed at the airport in Los Angeles airport after the Philippines gave him the boot.
Robert Sand, 50 was collared by US marshals Monday after a decade on the run, officials said.
The former car auctioneer fled to Florida and then Thailand after divorcing his wife, Lisa Sand, after 10 years of marriage in 1996, officials said.
He left her and his two children in the lurch for $750 weekly child-support payments, according to a federal complaint.
Department of Health and Human Services Special Agent Joseph Napolitano told The Post that Sand had fathered a child in Thailand and had been in trouble with the law there for falsifying a British passport.
He is no longer with the mother of that child, Napolitano said.
Sand then fled to the Philippines, and officials there arrested him for not having proper ID — and sent him back to the United States.
Sand ran motorcycle and pizza businesses in Thailand, and would even periodically call the HHS Inspector General's Office and offer to turn himself in, Napolitano said. But Sand never followed through.
"Sand ignored his children and his obligations for over a decade, going so far as to leave the state and ultimately the country to avoid providing support for his children," said US Attorney Loretta Lynch.
Before fleeing New York, Sand allegedly would underreport his income to reduce his weekly payments, which amounted to $375 per child per week. This was despite living a lavish lifestyle before his divorce, Napolitano said.
Sand became the No. 1 deadbeat dad in the country after the October arrest of Brooklyn physician Raihan Chowdburry, 51, who allegedly owed $1.6 million in child-support payments after leaving his wife and three kids in 2006.
