Bx. courthouse in need of a ‘glass’ action

The doors of justice at the Bronx Criminal Courthouse are cracking — literally — and it's threatening to disrupt the borough's system of crime and punishment.

Two of the main courthouse glass entrances are off limits to the public, due to fractured glass.

The other two, now funneling thousands of defense lawyers, jurors, perps and pedestrians in and out of the East 161st Street building, are already showing signs of cracking.

"We can't be in a position where defective or broken glass hinders access to the building," one judge complained.

Courthouse workers are quietly hoping those remaining two entryways break, so that the public can finally see the debacle that is the Bronx Hall of Justice — a $421 million boondoggle, plagued by structural problems since its 2008 opening.

Since its opening, Supreme Court Justice Efrain Alvarado, the administrative Criminal Court judge, says his staff has reported about 20 cases of cracking glass which have yet to be fixed by the city.

"We are aware of the cracked glass and broken window, and we are working to replace them," said a spokeswoman for the Department of Citywide Administrative Services.
