Belmont Park on Saturday plays host to one of the most popular days of the year in New York racing, New York Showcase Day: 10 races for state-breds, seven of them stakes worth nearly $1.2 million in purses.
Affectionately known as the "Muskrat Ramble," Showcase Day is headlined by the $250,000 Empire Classic at 1¹/‚ˆ miles on the main track. Juddmonte Farm's Lunar Victory, whose five-race winning streak was snapped last out when he fell a half-length short of catching the tough-as-nails Saginaw, will reign a solid favorite in the field of eight.
"Our horse seems to do quite well at 1 ¹/‚ˆ miles," trainer Bill Mott said.
Saginaw, cutting back from a mile to six furlongs in the $150,000 Hudson, will be looking for his ninth win in his last 10 starts.
Another race that could provide fireworks is the $150,000 Iroquois at seven furlongs for fillies and mares. Risky Rachel, 7-for-16 lifetime, faces off against 6-for-9 Agave Kiss and 5-for-11 Beautiful But Blue.
MSG Plus will televise the races from 4-6 p.m.
